Are you Happy?

Are You Happy?
By: Diane Lang
I was talking with a client about happiness and asked her if she was happy? Its the hot topic we have been working on for months. My client claimed that lately she has been feeling: Stuck, Unhappy and just Blah.
The truth is our happiness levels go up and down like a roller coaster and to expect we will always have up swings is an unrealistic expectation that sets us up for failure.  We must remember while down/blah that things will go up again.
We also all have different levels of happiness genetically. I like to call it our happiness set point. Some of us are genetically more happy then others but the good news is we can all be happier then we are today.
So, when feeling; Stuck, blah or unhappy do a self-evaluation and ask yourself:

Are my relationships good? healthy?
How is my career going? Is it time for a change?
How are my finances?
Marriage and Family?
Health? Are my basic needs met?
Personal life and self care?
For happiness to be felt we have to look at our lives from the big picture. When you answer the questions above, you might realize that marriage, family, relationships, etc are all good but your personal time doing hobbies and self-care are low. This will give you the knowledge you need to make changes.
When we have feelings of stuck/stale, blah, unhappiness, etc they are signs that something needs to change. It doesn’t have to be something big. Don’t be afraid of change. The only constant in our life is change.
For my client. we went through the list and realized that she worked over 50 hours a week not including commute, she has 2 kids and a husband that she is always worried about and taking care of plus the typical chores like housework, laundry, food shopping, cleaning etc.  She realized she never scheduled anytime for herself. She didn’t negotiate chores to others. She needed some quality “Me” time. This is exactly what we worked on scheduling in to her life.
Ask yourself: Are you happy? If the answer is yes, then great continue on. If not, then ask yourself the above questions and find what areas of your life need some tweaking.
