Beliefs

Belief:
By: Diane Lang

What do you believe about yourself?
Write down 8-10 ways you would describe yourself? such as roles, religion, gender, occupation, age, etc.
What do you believe about each description?
Example: I’m 46 years old and to me this is middle age which means old. So, I Started feeling old, fearful of getting old, feeling like I look really old. These beliefs are shaping the way I age.
We do this with ever description of our life.
When you do this exercise, you can see the patterns in your life, how your beliefs shape who you are and why you act and feel a certain way.
Now let’s get deeper in this exercise.
Look at your beliefs that you just wrote down and ask yourself:
Where did this belief come from?
Is the belief even true? (just cause you think it, doesn’t mean it’s true.)
Is the belief realistic? Does this belief work for you or is it a limiting belief? Is this belief holding you back?
Is it time to change this belief?
With beliefs come a set of expectations. Using my example about aging from above. I can say my belief on age has shaped my feelings on my looks and also has caused a fear of aging.
With beliefs come an identity and a label you put on yourself which puts you in a box.
For example: If your belief is your stupid then it will cause you to have a label: “I’m stupid”, which causes expectations such as” I can’t go back to school” or  I can’t get a degree”, etc.
Your identity/label can shape your life by having a huge impact on all the choices/decisions you make in your life.
The good news is you can release these limiting beliefs and clear a new path for new beliefs, possibilities and opportunities.
When we remove these limiting beliefs, we remove the label and the box we have put ourselves in, we become free. We can now grow and develop.
Your beliefs can cause us to feel stuck.
Your beliefs effect your perceptions of yourself and life in general.
If I believe the world is full of good people then I will see the good and search out the good but if I see the people as bad, this is what will appear in my life.
How do you see yourself and the world we live in?
