September Commitment – Morning Routine for Success

September Commitment – Morning Routine for Success
By: Diane Lang

September for me is a brand new start just like New Years is for others.
It feels like a brand new start with school back in session for my daughter and for me as an educator. It just feels right to take September to re-evaluate my life and see what needs fixing.
I realized my morning routine has gotten a little old and outdated. It’s time for a refresh.

My new routine consists of:
When I first wake up: I stay in bed and do a 7-12 minute guided visualization where I continue to visualize my goals. Sometimes the goals for the day, other times it’s long term goals I’m working on. It doesn’t matter if you visualize a short or long term goal but just pick one so you don’t get overwhelmed. If 7-12 minutes is too long, then do 3-5 minutes. Just do it.
My shower is the next on my routine and I make it a mindful experience. I say my gratitude in the shower by asking myself- what are 2-3 things I’m grateful for that happened yesterday.
Right after my gratitude, I say to 2-3 things I did well yesterday.
When I’m finished re-training my brain with gratitude and what I did well, I say my thanks to god/universe/source- whatever you choose and to anyone in my world who has been helpful. I wrap it up with asking for guidance for myself and those in need.
After my shower while eating breakfast, I repeat my positive affirmations. My affirmations are beliefs in my life I’m choosing to work on changing because they are not serving me or even making me feel stuck.
My affirmations currently:
I’m loved
I’m abundant.
It used to be I’m whole and healthy but I feel whole and healthy now so I moved on to the new affirmations. I will say them at breakfast and then all day when needed and right before bed. I will repeat the affirmations everyday until I believe them, then it’s time for new affirmations.
I also exercise every morning. Sometimes it’s just a 15 minute walk, other times it’s an hour. Sometimes it’s strength training, I mix it up but every morning I get some exercise.

I know this might seem a lot, but that is why I do gratitude, what I did well and affirmations during my daily shower and breakfast. It doesn’t change my schedule at all.
Sometimes, my exercise is just parking really far from campus so I get in my walk. Figure out ways to get your morning routine done. It sets you up for success and starts your day in the right frame of mind – positive.
What does your morning routine look like? It might be time to update yours or start one.
Happy September!
